PW 24 - Second City 10
In Freddie's stead (back injury), Bobby Carroll is a perfect choice for captain. He's a quite calm cool collected guy with few choice poignant words. His PaPa taught him well. EXCEPT, ... Bobby pulls us together before kickoff and states, "Philly on 3." Sometimes I don't think people get me about this Philly v. Whitemarsh thing. I'm the last guy to harbor animosity towards other clubs. Thank you Blackthorn, Bethlehem, Wilmington, Brockport, Kansas City, Anyclubthatwillhaveme RFC ... I like pre-merger Philly guys. Heck, new Hall of Famer Puddie Pennington is one of my best buds. He's a Philly guy. It's not about Philadelphia Rugby Club. It's about honoring, remembering, respecting the men of Whitemarsh Rugby Football Club - the men of Philadelphia Rugby Club. I grew up idolizing those men and rightly so. We are a club of three clubs. Philadelphia ('61), Whitemarsh ('67) and PWRFC ('85). It's not about the whole ... it's about the sum of the parts.
The side kinda came together this week. Thanks in no small part to our young steadies - Charlie, Matt, Bob, Bobby, Pat ... the future and our steady old boys - Sanders - McCurry - Nuttle. Bobby Carroll inadvertantly summed it up at the bar after the match. He said to me, "Who was that guy Jim? He's really good. He never made a mistake. Solid on posession and tackling - stealing the ball." "Jim," I told him, "is an old boy, who happens to be the captain of the National Championship PWRFC 7s team from 1999. Jim has played more Super League matches than you've played matches." Bobby continued, "... and that guy GJ or George I think, who's he where did he come from?" "George Sucher," I told him, "is an Eagle Prop who played for Washington and Philly Whitemarsh ... again lots and lots of Super League experience."Bobby just happened to be playing wing behind two of the greatest PWRFC players ever. Like I said, the side kinda came together last Saturday.
The scoring started quickly. PW moved down the field in the first few minutes of the game. The forwards lead by 40-somethings Brill, Sucher, Sanders, Zahralddin-Aravena and Nuttle took control. A clean set piece about 40 meters out went Schmidt - Siano to a crashing Frey who went untouched for the first try under the posts. Frey converted. PW 7 - 2nd City 0. PW continued to control the field of play with the comparatively young 'I'm old enough to be your son' forwards of Tasloski, Quigg and Haller adding a little speed and fitness to the mix of a very geriatric pack. This time the ball moved wide and fullback Bob Muth dotted down in the corner. Frey converted from the corner. PW 14- 2nd City 0. The PW forwards continued to dominate keeping the ball in 2nd City's end. Bob Haller, once again, played outstanding in the forwards and, on this occasion, a quick steal of the lineout and pass from Jeff Schmidt put the backs on the move. a little kick forward put the 2nd City fullback under pressure. Steve Frey made the tackle, stepped over, picked up the ball and fell on it for the try. PW 19 - 2nd City 0. Half.
PW controlled the second half. You'd think we couldn't get older ... in marches Puddinhead (49) and Lex McCurry (42) to spell a few tired souls. Second City hit a penalty kick and converted a nice try in the second half for their 10 points and PW added another try to round out the scoring. The Final: PW 24 - 2nd City 10.
Thanks to PCOM for the use of their field. The sun came out about an hour before kickoff. The day kinda just came together.

Pre-match Chatter
Picked up another player Thursday. If you are wondering - YES we are rebuilding. We are working hard daily on the club ... results are not up to PWRFC standards at the moment. We will do our best to remedy that tomorrow. The game will be played at PCOMs field and begin directly after the PCOM v. Lehigh game. We are playing Second City - bring your game faces and your kit.
Players be at the field at 1:45PM. Pitch is off Monument Rd. by PCOM ( off of City Line Avenue.) The gate will be open.
