Clark Calls me a Liar
"Contrary to Stephen Siano's 'memory' of playing his first rugby match way back in 1975, when mastadons still roamed the earth, I can attest that his first game came in a much later rugby epoch -- at least four months into 1976! Recent conclusive researches, by Darwin and Huxley and Hall, have uncovered original copies of The Whitemarsh Lineout, the rosetta stone of Philadelphia rugby newsletters, edited by the late great Wallaby second row, Clark 'Willie John' McDeLeon.
His original match report from Whitemarsh Lineout Vol. 2 No. 4. dated April 12, 1976 appears below:
C Game: Whitemarsh vs Westchester (N.Y.)
The C game was a scrappy contest if ever there was one. Like the A game, there were some punches thrown, but the game never got out of hand. Although Westchester had a number of ringers playing on their thirds, Whitemarsh was beefed up with some fresh talent from Cardinal O'Hara, a Delaware County correctional institution for wayward Catholic boys. Some of our best players have been rehabilitated there. In fact, it was an O'Hara whippersnapper who scored the only try of the game by running down a Harvey Harr up and under kick into the endzone (that's right, Harvey Harr). The young lad who scored is named Siano. Steve Siano. That's Siano as in Alphonse Siano, the famous Neopolitan stone mason and Charles Manson cultist who is now serving 30 years to life for his participation in the Whitemarsh-Bethlehem party. Congratulations C side.
Clark DeLeon
Yeah Clark,
I certainly did play in the Spring of 1976 for Whitemarsh. So you are correct to post what you have found. My question is: So if Clark didn't see the game and write about it and a tree falls in the woods is it real and does it make a sound? Sure when you write you always make a sound. I guess I need to call in Pat Denahey. Whitemarsh great and my freshman rugby coach. I remember my first O'Hara rugby match was in the Spring of 1975. My recolection is that it was not my first rugby game even in 1975. I believe my first match was in Whitemarsh blue, so maybe it was 1974? But then again, if you didn't write about it, did it really happen. I love ya - man.
